What to put on a tardy pass
A good tardy pass answers the teacher's questions at a glance, so the student can walk in and sit down without a conversation at the door:
- Who and when. The student's name, the date and the time they arrived.
- Where they're headed. The period and the teacher or class.
- Why. A quick reason, like unexcused, or held by the office or nurse.
- What happens next. The consequence or follow-up, so the student knows where they stand right away.
- Who wrote it. Staff initials make the pass harder to fake.
Tips for using printed passes
- Print on colored paper and change the color each quarter, so old passes are easy to spot.
- Keep passes at every spot where tardies get logged: the front office, hallway tardy stations and wherever staff run tardy sweeps.
- Write the next step on the pass. Students change their behavior faster when the response is immediate and predictable. Our guide to building a tardy policy covers how to set up those steps.

Is the tardy pass maker really free?
Yes. Make and print as many passes as you like. We ask for your email the first time you print.
Can I print passes on a receipt printer?
Yes. Choose "Receipt printer (3 inch / 80 mm)" under Print layout. Most thermal receipt printers used at front desks and tardy stations work, as long as they're set up as a printer on your computer.
Will my design be saved?
Your design, including your logo, is saved in your web browser on this computer, so it's ready the next time you open this page. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.
